Hurricane Katrina Oral History Collection

Scope and Contents

The Hurricane Katrina Oral History Collection contains interviews with 40 individuals. Interviews were videotaped to mini-DV and audio recorded to tape and mini-tape. For access purposes, the videos and audio recordings were digitized and are available on DVD and CD. Transcripts are available for nine of the interviews. There are also nine produced “final project” DVDs. All materials were produced in the spring of 2006, and all interviews were conducted in New Orleans.

J. Edgar Monroe Collection

The J. Edgar Monroe Collection consists primarily of documents related to Mr. Monroe’s business interests, such as the Canal Bank and Trust Co., Canal Assets, Inc., Electric Bond and Share, and Southdown, Inc. The collection also contains a small number of Monroe’s personal documents and school records of Robert J. Monroe, J. Edgar Monroe’s nephew.

J. Gentil Papers

Scope and Contents The J. Gentil Papers consists of three handwritten documents, all of them in French. The leather-bound volume, titled “Chants de L’exil,” includes sixteen poems or songs. It is unclear if the entries are gathered or the original work of Gentil; entries list a geographic location and date. The other two documents, “Instruction et Avenir” and an untitled manuscript, refer to “College de la Louisiane” and “University de la Louisiane” respectively, suggesting the texts are commencement...

J. Hanno Deiler Papers

Abstract

These papers consist principally of notes Deiler took while researching the history of Germans and German-Americans in Louisiana. They also contain writings by Deiler, a small amount of correspondence, and miscellaneous items. Much of the material is undated; most items probably originated between 1890 and 1909.

John Kennedy Toole Manuscript

This manuscript was donated by Lyn Hill Hayward, a longtime friend of Walker Percy's, and described by her as the manuscript given Percy by Thelma Toole. It is a typewritten draft entitled "Ignatius Reilly" (the name of Confederacy's protagonist), with a few penciled edits and blanks where the typist could not identify a word (cf. Ignatius Rising pp. 190-1). It is missing pages 3 and 4.
